St. Mary Church
Home | Attractions | St. Mary Church
St. Mary’s Church is one of Chennai’s most sacred and well known destinations located in another famous monument- the Fort St. George. The church possesses a great number of incidences and miracles associated with it and are also called as the Westminster Abbey of the East.
One of the first Anglican Church in Asia and one of the oldest monuments, the church was laid down on the Annunciation day of the Virgin Mary. This is precisely the reason behind its name. There are some arguments relating to the architect behind the church, believed to be either Edward Foule, Master-Gunner of Fort St. George, or William Dixon –the Chief Gunner of the Fort in 1678. The Church building consists of a nave which protrudes about 12 feet further than the two aisles, forming the sanctuary. The extraordinary thickness of the walls range from 3 to 4 feet thick and protect the building from attack and damage during storms.
The church is also known for its rather unique architectural characteristics like its ‘Bomb-proof roof rounded in the manner of a wagon’s roof for protection against the cannon-balls existing during the 17th century. The altar piece depicts the famous Last Supper which is believed to have its central figures done by famous painter Raphael. The altar piece has been a part of the church since 18th century. Overall, St. Mary’s Church is a must visit for everyone touring Chennai.
