The Marina Beach
Home | Attractions | The Marina Beach
The Marina Beach stretches along a 12 km shoreline along the Bay of Bengal and is arguably Chennai’s most popular tourist destination. A primarily sandy beach, Marina beach offers a laidback environment typical of beaches along with some famous monuments & historical attractions dotting its landscape. Although it is generally claimed that it is the second longest beach in the world, the fact remains that there are several other beaches longer than Marina.
Today, the beach has become a must visit for everyone visiting Chennai and apart from its tranquil beauty is also famous for the shops and food stalls. The Fishermen colonies on both sides and several memorials and statues, lovers' spot, aquarium, morning walk, joggers' track etc. makes it an ideal destination suitable for all age groups. The rough seas and strong waves make for a setting or experience quite the opposite that the city dwellers are accustomed to and a welcome change indeed.
Its enchanting territory begins near Fort St. George in the north and extends up to Besant Nagar in the south, covering a distance of about 12 km. The roadside area of the beach is dotted with several famous stone statues representing Indian legends, local leaders and famous personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Kannagi, Thiruvalluvar, M. G. Ramachandran, Tiruvalluvar, Kamarajar, Swami Sivananda, C. N. Annadurai and actor Sivaji Ganesan. A 34-feet tall, artificial Marina Waterfall is also installed here.
In the recent past, efforts have been made to ensure the Marina beach retaining its original beauty affected by proliferation of plastic bags, human waste and other pollutants. As a result of various voluntary organizations and an active local support the Beach is in a far better condition today than it was in the early 20th century.
Nearby attractions include the Vivekananda House, the place where he resided for nine days in 1897. The life and mission of Swami Vivekananda is displayed through various Art/Painting exhibitions forming a popular attraction. Additionally, various governmental institutions and historical buildings from the British rule are also located nearby.
