Valluvar Kottam

Home | Attractions | Valluvar Kottam

Built In: 1976

Dedicated To: Saint Thiruvalluvar

Valluvar Kottam is dedicated to one of Tamil Nadu’s famous sons- the great Poet Saint Thiruvalluvar. A historical site, the present temple or memorial is situated on a site that was once an unused lake. The temple is in the form of a chariot and contains a splendid statue of the poet exhibiting artistic design. It is said that the temple chariot is a replica of the one at Thiruvar. Thiruvalluvar was a renowned saint not only in India but throughout the world and his contribution to Tamil literature in the form of Thirukkural is unparalleled.

As a fitting tribute to the great poet, 133 verses from the same literary work have been inscribed at the base of the chariot. To construct the temple, about 3000 blocks of stones were required and it’s now the only monument of its kind in Tamil Nadu. An auditorium also exists inside with a capacity of up to 4000 people at a time. Several giant pillars surround the auditorium, with verses from the epic Thirukkural are inscribed on them. The unique aspect of the auditorium architecture is that it stands virtually without any support.
