Importance: Pilgrimage Destination
One of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India, Velanlanni is situated amidst shores of Bay of Bengal. This picturesque town is known for housing the sacred Basilica dedicated to 'Lady of health'. Attracting pilgrims from all parts of the world and even from various faiths, the town has even earned the title of a holy city by the pope himself.
The church belongs to the Roman Catholic sect and its extended Basilica comprises of two floors where one can find the statue of Jesus Christ. One of its unique features is its architecture displaying Gothic style. Rays of hope and piety are radiated from the spick and span environment around the shrine. Another famous landmark is the shrine of 'lady of sorrow' depicting a sorrowing Mother Mary carrying Jesus in her hand.
The Basilica has a museum situated opposite to it displaying a rich variety of exhibits & carvings. Some devotees have made precious offerings to the churches which are put on display. Splendid frescoes depict famous Biblical incidents adorning the walls and providing a glimpse to the glorious times. The Velankanni church is also known for the famous annual carnival which is celebrated here with much gaiety and enthusiasm. The festival falls on the 29th of August each year enhancing the religious fervor of the church.
