The cuisine of Chennai is regarded as a food lover’s delight. The delectable South Indian cuisine comprises of a distinct flavor from North India and is much sought after everywhere. Traditional recipes like idli, Dosa, vada and idiyappam, uttappam etc. proves hart to resist to the taste buds. Served on a banana leaf which is believed to take away untraceable amounts of toxins in the food, these rich and sumptuous variety of food items in indeed a must try for everyone visiting Chennai.
The Chettinad cuisine is a specialty in Tamil Nadu known for its mouth watering spicy combinations. A typical Tamil menu comprises of tasteful varieties adequate to satisfy your taste buds. Rice is the major staple food of chennai and its various forms comprises breakfast, lunch and dinner. Typical meals include cooked rice served with sambar, an array of vegetable dishes, rasam and curd (yogurt) & chutneys. Crisp papads or appalam completes the servings. Breakfast generally includes idly, dosa, vada or Upama. An exclusive Tamil dish is pongal – prepared from rice and lentils boiled wiith ghee, cashew nuts and pepper seed.
Tamil Nadu is famous for its filter coffee as well. The interesting process of coffee making involves first its roasting and grounding, followed by mixing with boiling hot water. This is followed by the addition of decoction after which it is set for about 15 minutes. Milk sugar is added according to taste and the instant drink is poured from one container to another in rapid succession to make the ideal frothy cup of filter coffee.
