Covelong Beach
Home | Excursions | Covelong Beach
Distance from Chennai: 48 km
Best Time: November and January
Attractions: Wind and Water Surfing
Covelong Beach is popular as one of the most beautiful and virgin beaches of India. This easily accessible location lies spreading its verdant beauty along the State Highway joining Chennai to the temple town of Mahabalipuram. A small and charming fishing village along the coast of the Bay of Bengal is located adjoining the beach.
Covelong beach has been witness to various historical incidences and developments in the past. The site was originally developed by Saadat Ali, Nawab of Carnatic as a port for political and strategic purpose. In the year 1746, French General Laboudonnais anchored his navy unit here and in 1752. The Carnatic War saw the port fell in to the hands of Lord Clive who promptly destroyed it to stop further French onslaughts. Several years later, the beach was returned to a state of tranquility and serene environment devoid of all military and political upheavals.
Today this sleepy fishing village has reinvented itself in to a famous picnic and excursion spot. A canal running parallel to the Bay of Bengal separates it from the mainland. Various enjoyment and adventure activities like Wind Surfing, Water surfing and Swimming enhance its viability as a favored excursion destination. To remind about its glorious and eventful past, an ancient Catholic Church, a Mosque and the Fort lies surrounding the beach. Overall, Covelong Beach is ideal for sunbathing, adventurous water sports, visiting some of the famous historical monuments or just relax and unwind in the tranquil environment.
