Coming into existence in the year 1976, the Crocodile Bank has become one the most popular sanctuaries for the reptiles. Today, the reserve boasts of the Muggar-Crocodylus Paluster, the Gharial - Gavialis Gangeticus, and the saltwater Crocodile - Crocodylus Porosus. The total area sprawls over 3.2 hectares of land.
The visitors can witness an exhaustive collection of crocodiles ranging from Indian to several African varieties. The reserves comprise of lush green flora to resemble the natural habitat and although the initial number of crocs was a mere 30, the number has shot up to over 2400 now. Another one of its attractions is the Crocodile Conservation Center-the largest in India breeding thousands of crocodiles since its inception.
Apart from alligators and crocodiles, the reserve also houses turtles, monitor lizards and snakes. The in-house snake farm is used to produce anti-venoms and the process of venom extraction is a great fascination for the visitors. various research on the biology of crocodiles, turtles and monitors lizards are also conducted in the reserve. The Crocodile Bank is indeed one of the best destinations for experiencing wildlife from close quarters around the region of Chennai.
