Madurai is famous owing to a variety of reasons. It is one of the oldest living cities of India as evidence traces its root back to pre-Christian era. This is also the second largest city of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, it exhibits some of the finest specimen of awe-inspiring architectural magnanimity. Today the city has made a place for itself in countries textile market with its huge production and some of the best harvests of jasmine flowers. In a nutshell, Madurai is a hub of history, culture & tradition all rolled into one to present a captivating destination.
According to a popular legend, the divine nectar (Madhu) that was showered from the locks of Lord Shiva resulted in its name being derived as Madurai. Originally built around the Meenakshi temple, Madurai has derived a rich cultural heritage from the great Tamil era during the course of its glorious 2500 years old history. The architectural grandeur of this temple city was even praised by The Greek diplomat and envoy Megasthenes' Indica who visited India in the 3rd century BC. Possessing rich royal history, it used to be the center of powers for the famous Cholas and Pandyas' regime in the 13th century. Some of today’s most famous historical monuments were constructed by King Thirumali Nayak of the Nayak dynasty including the Puthu Mandapam (The New Mansion), Raja Gopuram (The Main Tower) of the Meenakshi temple and the Thirumalai Nayak Palace.
Today, Madurai presents a fine synthesis of hustle and bustle of a new age city along with architectural constructions of the temples conjuring up its glorious bygone era. A sightseeing of Madurai is a fascinating experience allowing you to explore intricate architectural marvels, finest example of Dravidian Architecture and some famous temples like Meenakshi Amman Temple and Koodal Azhaar Temple. Thirumalai Nayak Mahal constructed in 1523 AD and Vandiyur Kanmoy Tourist Complex run by TTDC are some of the must visit destinations.
