Also known as Trichy, Thiruchirapalli is nestled on the banks of Kaveri River. This historical town is famous for the mammoth 83 m high Rock Fort Temple which is part of a 3500-million-old hill. The Ranganathaswamy Temple is in a way a small township with seven-walled complex. Apart from its famous temples, the town is also known for the cigars that are fondly used by several peoples and eminent personalities including Sir Winston Churchill.
Its star attraction is without doubt the Rockfort Temple now almost 2500 years old. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha as Pillayar and Lord Shiva as Thayumanaswamy, it comprises of three intricately carved temples situated on a 83 m high rock. Due to its rather strategic location, it was used as a military fortification by the Vijaynagar kings and later by the British, leading to the name christened as ‘Rockfort’. The Shiva Temple is beautifully carved and exhibit exquisite carvings of Gangadhara (Shiva receiving the Ganges in his locks). During the month of April, the sun’s ray’s fall directly on the lingam –resulting in a spectacular and one of a kind sight.
Other famous Temples
Ranganathaswamy Temple: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this is one of the most revered Vaishanite shrines in the country. With an area of 156 acres, Ranganathaswamy is also one of the largest temples in India. 7 concentric walls and 21 towers enclose the shrine which is 73 m high, making it one of the largest religious structures in the world. Its hall includes 1000 Pillars and several other smaller shrines are also located in the vicinity dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s incarnations.
Jambukeshwara Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Jambukeshwara temple exhibits beautiful carvings on its external walls. A stream flows through the temple in which the main deity is partly submerged. The name Jambukeshwara is derived from the legend according to which it used to be worshipped by elephants.
