Velankanni Festival

Velankanni Festival is associated with several historical incidences in relating to the sacred church. One such famous legend is about a ship-wrecked Portuguese sailors dating back to 16th century. The sailaor vowed to build a great shrine for the Virgin Mary in order to save the lives of sailors and villages in a terrible storm. Celebrated as a memorable day in which the ship managed to land safely, the Velankanni festival witnesses thousands of believers clad in orange robes to the sacred spot where the ship landed. The whole town of Velankanni is abode to several legends associated with Virgin Mary and her several miraculous healings. So much so that the church has now earned the title of 'Lourdes of the East'.
